The Republic of Palau is an archipelago of 586 islands large and small at the western tip of Micronesia, some 650 kilometers southeast of the Philippines. We have pursued development of Palau Pacific Resort paying the utmost respect to the natural environment along the western coast of Ngerkebesang Island in the state of Koror.
OVERSEAS BUSINESSES
Palau
Business Expansion
The roots of our endeavors that balance business pursuits and preservation of one of the Earth's last true paradises can be traced to 1956, when Noboru Goto, inaugural president of TOKYU LAND CORPORATION, became the first civilian Japanese to visit Palau after World War II.
That commitment to balancing business and environmental protection is illustrated aptly by Goto's exhortation to staff working on the initial project concept that they should not erect buildings that stood taller than the palm trees. Then, as now, we were conscious that Palau Pacific Resort should earn the welcome of the local people by making a real contribution to the community.
Business Model
An Environmentally Advanced Resort, Committed to Conservation and the Local Community
The project's operating company, Pacific Islands Development Corporation, was incorporated in Palau in December 1973. Following the acquisition of land and development work, Palau Pacific Resort was opened in 1984. Hotel operation was outsourced to Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts until 2007, and brought in-house by Pacific Islands Development Corporation in 2008.
Development was predicated on painstaking studies of the environment, and included works to maintain the hotel-front beaches and protect the mountainous area to the rear. For more than four decades, we have kept a long-term view and worked closely with local organizations on a variety of activities to help preserve the breathtaking local environment and biodiversity.
For instance, building design emphasized harmony with the surrounds: structures are a maximum of two stories high, and none protrude above the palm trees. Interior designs incorporate motifs from the local culture and traditions.
We have sought to ensure the safety and security of Palau Pacific Resort by building our own infrastructure systems rather than relying on vulnerable local infrastructure. Water is sourced on-site, thus securing a safe supply of drinking water while helping to protect local water resources; wastewater is treated in our own treatment plant; and we have our own power generation capability, including solar, and an exhaust heat recycling system. In this and other ways, we strive for better energy efficiency and a smaller environmental footprint by reducing CO2 emissions.
We are also a major contributor to local communities and a driving force in Palau's economy, providing jobs for locals and developing a skilled workforce for hotels and the tourism industry.
Project
Palau Pacific Resort
A top-class resort hotel born from the pursuit of balance between development and protection of the environment. The hotel marked its 30th anniversary in 2014, and was expanded with 60 new rooms in October of the same year. In July 2015, five Water Bungalows--Micronesia's first--were added, and in May 2019, the Pristine Villas and Bungalows was opened. The new area encompasses the Water Bungalows, seven new independent Pool Villas--the first in Palau--and other facilities. Today, Palau Pacific Resort offers the most guest rooms of any hotel in the country.
