Town Planning in NISEKO Area
The Niseko brand: highly acclaimed as an international snow resort
The Niseko area, located in central Hokkaido, is known as the "St. Moritz of the Orient," where visitors can savor the finest powder snow. Since the 2000's it has grown into a mecca visited by skiers and snowboarders from all over the world.
With the extension of the Hokkaido Shinkansen rail line and a new highway, which are scheduled to be operational by FY2030, and the development of foreign-affiliated luxury hotels, Niseko is also an area with heightening expectations as a world-class resort.
Value up NISEKO road to 2030
At Niseko, we are advancing the town-planning project Value up NISEKO road to 2030, with the year 2030 as a target.
Niseko, which attracts a large number of visitors with its powder snow, has been formed by its exceptional climate and the support of many people. To aspire to be a resort that will continue 50 and 100 years into the future, considerations of the global environment and the social environment are essential.
We are engaged in town planning aimed at sustainable development together with the local government, businesses, and residents to contribute to decarbonization, protect the rich food resources, and improve exchange with diverse people. In these ways, we will give back to the community as a resort operator that benefits from the blessings of nature.
We have solved environmental and social issues through town planning, and along with these efforts, we will make maximum use of our experience in developing and operating large-scale integrated resort towns and our town-planning resources as a comprehensive developer to generate customer experience value and area value.
Together with the local government, businesses, and residents, we will build up the global Niseko brand as a resort that aims at sustainable development and as a destination that is chosen time and again.
Our history at Niseko
We launched our Niseko operations in 1985 with the acquisition of Niseko Kogen Kanko, Co., Ltd., founded Niseko Tokyu Resort Co., Ltd., and began operating the Niseko Kokusai Hirafu Ski Area and the Niseko Weiss Ski Area. In 2004, the Niseko Kokusai Hirafu Alpen Course was integrated and Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU was opened. We have subsequently been involved in the development of Niseko as a ski resort operator. Kutchan Town, where Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU is located, has declared itself a ski town, and the skiing business is an extremely important core industry.
Subsequently, the lifts were replaced and renovated over a two-year period from 2016 to increase the lift capacity at Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU. Also, amid the increased demand for condominiums from foreign tourists and foreign investors, Tokyu Resorts & Stays Co., Ltd. began operating the AYA Niseko condominium in December 2016. Additionally, in 2019 the Mountain Center Annex was opened at Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU as a related facility. TOKYU LAND CORPORATION has been advancing continuous development at Niseko to respond to the needs of users, who are increasing year by year.
Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU
On the slopes, visitors can enjoy the finest powder snow while viewing Mt. Yotei, which is counted among the 100 most famous mountains in Japan, right before their eyes. Beginners and advanced skiers alike can choose a suitable course. In the summer season, the Gondola lift is used as the Summer Gondola, from which visitors can look out on the majestic nature of Mt. Yotei and the Niseko area.
The name and logo were revised in 2021 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the first ski lift at Niseko. This expresses our determination to lead and take the responsibility to make the Niseko area an even more attractive resort, based on our experience in supporting the area's development to date and the trust of the local community.
We are also working to make use of the slopes outside of the skiing season for mountain biking and other activities that are gaining popularity year by year, and contributing to boosting the value of the area as an all-season resort.
Regional Collaboration DMO / Area Management
Regional Collaboration DMO「Niseko Promotion Board」
In 2007, with TOKYU LAND CORPORATION as the core, the three towns of the Niseko area (Kutchan Town, Niseko Town, and Rankoshi Town) launched the regional collaboration DMO* Niseko Promotion Board.
Niseko Promotion Board draws together local government organs, business organizations, and tourism business operators in the Niseko area, with the objective of supporting continued growth and contributing to regional economic vitalization. The Board hopes to introduce Niseko's abundant natural resources and its lodging facilities, dining establishments, retail shops and other town functions, and various outdoor and indoor guides and services to many customers inside and outside of Japan, and make it into a tourism resort area they can long enjoy as fans.
*DMO (Destination Management/Marketing Organization): A corporation that develops a tourism area while collaborating with diverse concerned parties.
Niseko Hirafu Area Management
We led the launch of Niseko Hirafu Area Management in 2017. As an area management member, we are engaged in cleanup activities and the improvement of scenery, and we conducted a verification trial for the regional electronic currency NISEKO Pay, which can only be used in the Kutchan and Hirafu areas. We are now working to upgrade winter sightseeing bus service and other infrastructure toward creating a town that offers more comfortable living to local residents and more convenient stays to tourists.
NISEKO Pay
NISEKO Pay is a regional electronic currency that can only be used in the Kutchan and Hirafu areas. Users download a dedicated app on their smartphones and scan QR codes at participating outlets for the cashless payment of usage fees. With this cashless payment system, visitors are freed from the inconvenience of carrying cash at restaurants and stores in the ski resort area, Including Niseko Mountain Resort Grand HIRAFU.
