LARGE-SCALE PROJECT
Shibuya Sakura Stage
Background of Redevelopment Project
Over about 25 years since the establishment of the former redevelopment preparatory association in October 1998, more than 450 tenants and about 120 landowners have discussed and given shape to their thoughts. The redevelopment preparatory association was set up in 2008, the urban planning was determined in June 2014, and the establishment of the urban redevelopment association was approved in September 2015.
Discussions were held with many landowners about how to make the future town of Sakuragaoka enjoyable and attractive, and to determine the philosophy behind this unique urban development of Sakuragaoka.
Discussions and coordination were also conducted with local residents other than landowners, local government officials, and other related persons. The project proceeded steadily and, following approval of the rights conversion plan in October 2018, construction commenced in May 2019.

Concept of Shibuya Sakura Stage
Birth of a New Gateway to Shibuya – A Pleasant Place to Walk Around
Sakuragaoka, located in the heart of Shibuya with an atmosphere that is both relaxed and lively, was cut off from Shibuya Station with the opening of National Highway 246 when Japan hosted the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Nevertheless, its restaurants, music and cultural facilities, and residences continued to spread and it has become a place with its own unique culture where diverse people gather.
In this development of Shibuya Sakura Stage, by restoring the Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka Exit (station ticket gate), which was once one of Shibuya’s centers, and developing a multi-layer pedestrian network linking the station with the surrounding areas, a base will be created for various people such as office workers, residents and visitors, and connections with the hinterland districts of Daikanyama and Ebisu will be realized.
Through this restoration of links with surrounding districts and enhancement of functions and systems responding to the needs of globalization, Shibuya Sakura Stage will embrace a wide range of people. Furthermore, we aim to make it a pleasant place to walk around by providing a paddling pool where children can play and a vegetable garden in the lush greenery of the plaza, and creating a lively atmosphere through performances and continuous events in the plaza.
A new Shibuya landmark for working, playing, and living
Through this coexistence of offices and commercial facilities in a rare location adjacent to Shibuya Station together with a unique combination of these facilities and residences in the central district of the station, we aim to develop a lively area where various generations can live and visit, seamlessly combining working, playing, and living.
Introducing urban functions that contribute to enhancing international competitiveness
Coordinating with the previously developed urban functions of the central district of Shibuya Station, we will develop living support facilities as functions to further enhance international competitiveness while resolving the issues of living environment inadequacies around Shibuya Station. Aiming to realize a living environment that ensures a comfortable stay for foreign business persons and their families visiting Shibuya, we will introduce serviced apartments, childcare support facilities, and international medical facilities. In addition, by introducing entrepreneurship support facilities with support functions for promoting exchange, transmitting information and various other procedures, Shibuya’s creative content industry and international competitiveness will be further enhanced.
Strengthening of disaster prevention and environmental initiatives
Together with the improvement of disaster preparedness through redistricting and the integration of old, small buildings, a safe and secure district will be developed through the dissemination of information in the event of a disaster. By establishing emergency supply storehouses and securing temporary shelter spaces, provisions will be made for people unable to return home and a disaster-resilient district will be created.
As heat-island measures including the development of a green plaza as a space for rest and relaxation, three-dimensional greening utilizing the ground, rooftops and building surfaces will be promoted, while the environmental burden will be mitigated through the use of natural energy such as solar power.
